Activism leads to... what?
I am sure I am missing out on some important issues again. I've been thinking about these activists and their actions. I understand that these are very passionate people and very concerned about certain issues, whatever they may be, animals, traffic, torture, food, openness on the net etc. That's all fine, but what I don't get are the actions.
I see crowds outside fur shops who manifest their opinion against fur dealers, and how cruel it is to farm animals for the soul purpose of becoming coats for rich ladies in rich areas of town. On the other hand they have leather shoes on... OK, I admit it might be that these shoes are made of leather that happens to be a biproduct of food manufacturing and thereby quite acceptable.
Then I think, most of these young (they mostly are) have decided to take their thoughts a bit further and have become vegetarians/vegans to really show their point. And that takes away the leather shoe theory too. This is still unclear to me...
Sometimes in a divine moment of clear thinking militant fractions of these activists find themselves inside a farm letting animals out of their cages because the animals are raised by cruel means and not treated as well as they probably should. I can agree that there is a truth there. But the animals are let out in the woods to a certain death. These are animals that have been bred for generations in this habitat of cages and have no idea of how to act and react in the wild. Where will they find the tray of food they are used to in their cages? Don't think for a minute that they understand that predators are different from their friends at the farm. Violent death awaits, and I still don't get it...
Another group, Reclaim the City (haven't heard of them lately), wants to reduce traffic in cities and makes it a habit to sit themselves down in the busiest crossing in the city during peak hours to make a point. Well, yes, the traffic stops. Engines running on idle, people get pissed off and it takes hours to resolve all the logistical nightmares resulting from this, rather illogical activity. But then again, I might be missing the point here...
Anonymous, in my point of view, works in similar ways. Very, very angry people hacking sites of the daily flavor and releasing information to public. Bad as it is, affected records include personal passwords, which leads to a hassle changing them on every site they have been to lately (because people use the same password on every site), but worse, it could lead to bankruptcy or result in other economical issues which lead to in worst case dismissal of employees. I am sure this is not the main reason behind these hacks btu in the end it is innocent people suffering from activist deeds.
One I might grow up and understand what it's all about. But in most cases above, it seems the activists are shooting the messenger and their aiming skills has a lot to desire. Until I understand the mechanics behind this I have to think that it would be more important to change people's, and state's/govermnment's, mindsets. And this is just not the way to go about.
