Apple 911 patent

I am horrified about this news announcement about Apple has been granted a patent for placing a call with 911 by fingerprint recognition patterns. It should in my opinion be illegal to patent anything that has to do with matters regarding 911 or any emergency on which someones life is depending upon. I thought this was the intention of anyone being able to use any phone without unlocking and call 911 (or wahtever number you use in your country). I understand that this patent was filed in the olden days and even mentions earphones connected to this 3.5mm connector, which Apple today does not utilize any more, and I get that you have a "secret" pattern that allows you to call 911 in disguise... but still.
